“ANG HULING MAMBABATOK"
Documentary by Kara David
For many generations, Kalinga has kept its prized art of tattooing, known locally as “pagbabatok." It was considered a rite of passage for women about to be married, and was also a symbol of valor and strength for men. In this unique tradition, wood and ink are the primary tools for imprinting art on the natives’ skin. Whang Od, 89 years old, is the oldest living “mambabatok" or tattoo artist. Her grandchild Grace is a candidate for passing on the tradition. But as Kara David and the team discover, the motives for tattooing are slowly changing. Rather than for tradition or culture, tattooing is now seen as a lucrative means to earn.
